Catalan newspaper Sport reported on May 29th that Tottenham Hotspur star Christian Eriksen was identified as a “great alternative” target for Barcelona, if they fail to sign Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann.

The Danish international and the Frenchman play in different positions. If the La Liga winners fail to sign Griezmann, then they would push Philippe Coutinho move higher up the pitch and make Eriksen their midfield target.

Today’s edition of Sport brings bad news for Barcelona. Their interest in Eriksen has alerted the north London club and Tottenham have “reacted quickly” (like, within 24 hours) as they want to shield one of their star players.

Eriksen has two years left on his current deal with the Premier League club and will offer him a new deal. Tottenham want to extend his stay by a further three years so that they can keep him until 2023. Mauricio Pochettino also committed his future by signing an extension.

Before signing a new deal, the former Southampton manager wanted a commitment from his employers that they will hold star players like Eriksen, Harry Kane and Dele Alli. In addition to this, Pochettino “already had a meeting” with the Dane in Copenhagen and explained to him how important he is for Tottenham.

Even though the English outfit have no intentions of allowing Eriksen leave, the only way the player can push for transfer this summer is if he asks Tottenham to sanction his sale. Should this happen, Sport say they will demand a fee in excess of €100m.
