Tottenham Hotspur are in the mix for FC Cincinnati striker Kévin Denkey as they look to add to their attacking options this summer.
Diario de Sevilla report on Tottenham’s interest in the 25-year-old today and potential competition from Real Betis.
Tottenham in the mix
The newspaper explains that the Spanish side are working on signing a ‘top-class striker’ to boost their squad this summer. They want to add competition for Cucho Hernandez.
They need additions to strengthen their options for the Champions League and have a growing list of options that they are exploring. Kévin Denkey is a player they have been tracking since his time at Cercle Brugge.
He scored 66 goals and registered 20 assists in 152 games for the Belgian club before joining Cincinnati in a €15m deal last summer. He has 31 goals and six assists in 51 games for them to date.
Diario report that there is fierce competition for his signature. Paris FC, Lille, Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund have also shown interest in the striker this summer. Cincinnati are looking for around €15m from any deal, essentially getting their money back. That may be optimistic on the Spanish newspaper’s side, though.
Tottenham scouting needed
Tottenham are unlikely to have any problems with that fee or a bigger one. They’ve showed a desire to spend big this summer on Roberto de Zerbi’s squad.
But they’d want to scout Kévin Denkey extensively before making any moves for him. It would be a risky venture for them to sign a striker whose career to date has been spent in the lower leagues in France, Belgium and now America.
They would, perhaps, be hoping for a similar success story to the one Jhon Durán enjoyed at Aston Villa. He impressed at Villa Park after moving from America. He was then sold in a huge deal a few years later.
For now, Denkey appears to just be on a list, with Tottenham and several other clubs watching him impress in America.
