Tottenham hope that Champions League football and a new contract can convince Cuti Romero to remain at the club this summer and not join Atletico Madrid.
That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who say those are the two ‘weapons’ Tottenham want to use to keep Romero where he is.
They explain that Romero is Atletico’s main target to strengthen their defence this summer. The 27-year-old is believed to want a change of scenery and departure from Tottenham. He’s even openly admitted he wants to play in Spain at some point in his career.
Numerous reports from Spain have made it clear that Atletico and Diego Simeone have been working on signing him from Tottenham for a while. Simeone has even spoken to the Tottenham defender on several occasions about a transfer.
Tottenham are aware of their interest but are fighting against it. They hope that playing in the Champions League next season will make Romero consider his future at the club. That’s their first argument for keeping him.
The second is a contract extension with a salary increase. His current deal runs until 2027, but Daniel Levy would be willing to offer improved terms. If Romero doesn’t agree to a new deal, he considers this summer as the time to sell and will agree to let him go. Any transfer would have to be for €50m plus.
His future will be determined in the coming weeks, but Tottenham clearly believe they can fight against a departure.
