Tottenham are one of the many ‘suitors’ for Barcelona full-back Emerson this summer, with the Catalan giants keen to sell.
That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who cover the player’s situation today and the interest in him.
Emerson is partly owned by Barcelona alongside Betis, with Barça owning 50% of his rights at present and having an option to take another 30% should they wish.
They, though, have no plans to use the Brazilian going forward and would prefer to sell this summer to raise cash for transfers in other areas of the team.
There are plenty of ‘posh suitors’ for him, with PSG, Tottenham, Bayer Leverkusen, Inter Milan, and AC Milan having all shown an interest.
Betis are not one of them, according to Estadio, who say it will be ‘impossible’ for them to bid.
Instead, they are looking at making a ‘capital gain’ on any deal via one of two routes.
Either Barcelona sell for around €25m, which is the price they have agreed with Betis for a sale, and pocket €6,5m courtesy of their share, or Barcelona pay for another 30% of the player, which will also see Betis pocket €9m.
Both clubs are keen to work out a transfer that will ‘satisfy everyone’, but it’s believed it will be ‘complicated’ to reach a transfer figure that would make the operation profitable.
That suggests suitors like Tottenham are not keen on paying €25m, which is understandable given the way finances have been hit by Covid-19.
The interest from Spurs makes a lot of sense, though.
They need a right-back given Serge Aurier looks likely to leave this summer, and Matt Doherty simply hasn’t worked out since arriving from Wolves.
Emerson would fit the bill nicely, and with Barcelona and Betis keen to sell, there’s a deal there to be done, although it seems there would be some negotiations over the price first.
