On Tuesday, we covered a report from Germany’s largest newspaper, Bild, which stated Danny Röhl has held talks with Werder Bremen.

The Sheffield Wednesday manager is keen on leaving the Championship club this summer, and has made that clear during multiple interviews with the German media following the end of his club’s season.

Indeed, at points Röhl has spoken like he’s already left Sheffield Wednesday, despite having a contract with the club lasting until June 2027.

Bild reported the manager had been one of the main candidates for Werder Bremen but talks didn’t go in a positive direction.

The same German newspaper now report Horst Steffen is set to sign a three year contract with the Bundesliga club. When looking at why other candidates fell away, they state: ‘A big advantage over Kwasniok and option number 3, Danny Röhl (36/Sheffield Wednesday): Steffen is affordable for Werder Bremen, while the other coaching options would have required transfer fees in the millions. Too great a risk, too great a burden.’

So the Sheffield Wednesday manager was third choice but a move wouldn’t have been possible anyway because he’s considered too expensive. According to previous reports, Röhl has a release clause worth around £5m.

Given no club has been entirely convinced on the manger yet, the idea of paying such a fee for what many consider a gamble is proving a roadblock.
