AC Milan have insisted they are not ‘guilty’ of anything in the developing betting case against Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
That’s according to Calciomercato.it, who say the Italian side are insisting they knew nothing of the midfielder’s problems before his move to Newcastle this summer.
Tonali is set to be suspended from football at some point this week, with reports in Italy making it clear that he and his lawyers have struck a plea bargain with Italian prosecutors that will see Tonali miss ten months of football and spend further time in rehabilitation and other social commitments.
It means the midfielder will miss the rest of the season with Newcastle and the European Championships next season before returning for the 2024/25 season.
Reports in England have indicated that while Newcastle will back the player, and are continuing to do so, the player will not be receiving his €8m salary plus bonuses, for the entirety of his ban.
Furthermore, there have been reports that Newcastle could look into a possible ‘millionaire lawsuit’ against Milan.
This is news to the Italian giants, though, who are unaware of any such idea and insist they’ve had no contact with the Premier League club.
They’ve been contacted by CM.it and insisted that there have been no discussions with Newcastle to date and they do not ‘expect to have any’ either.
As far as they are concerned, they are not ‘guilty’ of anything that has happened and bare no responsibility for the sanction that will soon be handed down to the player.
In other words, their line is that they knew nothing of Tonali’s problems before selling him to Newcastle this summer and are thus not responsible in any way for what has happened, something they’ll be sticking to if the Magpies do decide to sue or anything of that nature.
