Fenerbahçe’s Dušan Tadić has used his transfer to Southampton to send a message to Twente fans.

The 35-year-old arrived at the Turkish club in July 2023, after spending five years at Ajax. Prior to that, he had spells at FC Groningen and FC Twente in the Netherlands.

On Thursday, the forward returned to the Netherlands with José Mourinho’s side, to face Twente. The Europa League tie ended in a 1-1 draw, with the former Southampton star scoring the equaliser for Fenerbahçe.

According to Voetbal Primeur, Tadić didn’t receive a ‘warm reception’ from the Eredivisie side’s fans. He was booed by their supporters during the European clash.

The Serbian spent two years at Twente before he was sold to Southampton in 2014. The Saints invested €15m to buy him and he’s till date Twente’s club-record sale.

After the tie, the player reminded Twente fans about the fee he helped them earn.

“It’s not a problem for me. It’s football and those are emotions. The fans just shouldn’t forget that I earned them €15m when I went to Southampton,” he told NOS, relayed by Voetbal Primeur.

This isn’t the first time the attacker has been booed by Twente fans. He has experienced this when he faced them with Ajax.

“I’m used to it, because when I played for Ajax they also whistled at me. But it’s no problem. I can enjoy it sometimes,” he told ESPN NL.

Tadić was at Southampton between 2014 and 2018, managing 24 goals and 32 assists from 162 matches.
