Despite Marcelo Bielsa’s departure from Leeds United, his time at Elland Road continues to be taken positively, both by fans and by those who saw this work from afar.

The manager often gets mentioned in interviews made by the Argentine media, and it happens again today in an chat that former River Plate and Boca Juniors player Sergio Berti gave to La Nación.

The retired footballer had a lot to say about his former coach, and pointed out a couple of factors which make Bielsa so special.

“It’s not just about winning, which he has still won, but about what you teach and give. It is no coincidence that wherever he goes, Bielsa leaves his mark, that he makes a school, that those directed by him keep the best memories, that there is a street in Leeds with his name, the values that he transmits,” Berti told La Nación (via TyC Sports).

Berti recalled that he couldn’t really understand Bielsa’s methods during their time at Newell’s Old Boys, and as his thoughts changed through the years, he later apologised to his former coach.

“I wrote to him when he was kicked out of Lille to apologise for not having understood him at the time. That I had regretted, over time, not learning all that he taught.

“No matter how much criticism he receives from certain sectors, for me he is the best coach that Argentine football has given.”

Marcelo Bielsa joined Leeds United in the summer of 2019 and stayed until February 2022. Besides the promotion to the Premier League, the coach held a record of 81 wins in 170 games in charge of the Whites.
