Kristoffer Ajer was expected to leave Celtic in the summer and the centre-back changed agents in June to reportedly help him get a move away from the Scottish Premiership champions.
The 22-year-old, who has a contract until 2022, failed to leave Celtic Park.
AC Milan were one of the sides interested in the Norway international in the last window and reports in Italy still suggest the Serie A side continue to be keen on him.
Norway’s VG explains ‘it has been a badly hidden secret’ that Stefano Pioli has a ‘good eye’ on the Celtic player, and the Italian club’s manager ‘cryptically’ responded when asked if Milan will sign Ajer next month.
“I do not have the main responsibility for it. We still have many games before the end of December. We will see what happens in January,” Pioli told VG.
The Rossoneri had an opportunity to take a closer look at Ajer when they faced Neil Lennon’s twice in the Europa League group stage. The Norwegian played the full 90 minutes for Celtic on both occasions.
VG have also managed to gather comments from the defender regarding his future. However, there’s no clarity on when he made these comments.
“I do not want to comment too much on how the summer was, but it was clearly of great interest. I do not comment on anything about transfer rumours,” Ajer said.
“I am very happy at Celtic, have a little over a year and a half left on my contract and respect the club I play for. I do not comment on transfers at all.”
When asked what he thinks of Milan, the Norwegian explained: “There has been interest, but I relate to the fact that I have a contract at Celtic, and I am very happy with that.”
