Arsenal knocked Real Madrid out of the Champions League in the quarterfinals and now face the equally difficult, and perhaps more so, task of facing PSG.

Defeat to the Gunners didn’t go down well at all in Madrid, especially when coupled with their lacklustre, so far, domestic campaign. The Champions League is supposed to be the stage upon Real Madrid simply make things happen, and it didn’t work out that way for them this time.

Carlo Ancelotti’s future is very much in doubt and the club’s local media are already talking about who will replace him and when, with the possibility of an interim manager for the Club World Cup.

Los Blancos will also be looking at bringing in signings during the summer, and Marca report William Saliba is the ‘chosen one’ for defence.

They want a new leader at the back and the Arsenal man is considered one of the best in the world.

Marca present the transfer intention as an open secret and state: ‘Madrid knows it, the player knows it, and Arsenal knows it. With things still at stake— the Champions League for the Londoners and La Liga for Real Madrid —the exchange of messages is done in a lukewarm and discreet manner, but Florentino seems willing to roll up his sleeves to bring to the Bernabéu the man who many currently consider the best centre back on the market.’

Florentino Pérez will presumably be overseeing any effort.
