Friday’s edition of L’Equipe has the newspaper’s annual look at salaries in Ligue 1. The amounts are often contested, especially by players at the higher end, and those who are deemed not to be worth what their bank account receives.
At OGC Nice, the focus is on Morgan Schneiderlin and the €250k a month he’s said to earn. L’Equipe blame the salary on the ‘ghost of England’, explaining that whilst Nice couldn’t match the midfielder’s wages from Everton, they had to make a big effort to get as close as possible.
Given Schneiderlin had been outside of France for so long, he receives tax benefits for returning, so he’s probably not taking the huge income drop the newspaper suggests.
What appears to be annoying them is that he’s failed to be the star he was expected to be after his Everton exit. Fans of the Toffees won’t be astonished by that, with the 31-year-old largely failing to impress since he left Southampton for Manchester United.
Nice wanted an immediate impact from the player, yet given he’d struggled for regular prominence in the years leading to the move that was probably on the optimistic side.
