Hull City manager Sergej Jakirović has shared his delight at how things are going at Hull City, his love for Yorkshire and the recent praise from Neil Warnock.
Sportske Novosti have an interview with the Hull City manager this week. He discussed various topics as he enjoys life with the Tigers.
He joined them in the summer and hasn’t looked back since, winning 12 of 25 games in the Championship to date. That’s earned Hull a total of 41 points and put Hull sixth in the table. They’re only three points behind third placed Ipswich and five behind second placed Middlesbrough.
It’s been a super season so far, so much so that Jakirović has already been linked with other jobs. For now, he is more than happy with how things are at Hull.
“This period in Hull has been great when you add it all up, that’s how I would sum up the story so far,” he said.
“We got the most out of it when we had five or six important players injured, but we put together a few great games and big wins. We in the staff agreed that we would have taken a few more points as a team.
“However, overall, we are very satisfied because the team is presenting everything on the pitch that we have been preparing together and with great “blood” in hard training. The Championship is a true marathon, which is not easy to endure.
“Excellent results also increase ambitions, it would be a great success to get into the playoffs, and then everything is open, although we do not have any particular imperative.”
Hull City manager is a Yorkshire fan
It’s been a quick adaptation for Jakirović, who has never worked or lived in England before. He’s previously worked across Europe with the likes of Maribor, HNK Rijeka, Dinamo Zagreb and Kayserispor.
That means he’s accustomed to adapting to new locations. And it seems he’s been fully charmed by Yorkshire in particular.
“The club is great, we have all the conditions for quality work,” he added.
“The city, like the whole region of Yorkshire, is very lively, people love football and their club. Every game we have good support and at least 20 thousand people in the stands. At away games, all sectors of our fans are filled. Thank God, there were great celebrations.”
His work so far has left many impressed, including iconic manager Neil Warnock. He even went as far as to label him the best manager in the second tier of English football. That’s something Jakirović is particularly impressed by.
“Neil Warnock is a huge coaching name here, so his words mean a lot to me, and I want to continue proving myself in England,” he replied in response to that praise.
“As for coaches, I respect Thomas Frank from Tottenham the most. He is the creator of Brentford as we see it today. He was the first to bring them into the Premiership with top-notch transfers. I would also mention Chris Wilder from Sheffield United and Mark Robins from Stoke.”
Hull City manager has Premier League dream
The aim is, if things continue to go well, to target a long sought-after return to the Premier League. Jakirović is certainly looking that high, admitting he has dreams of managing in the division at some point.
“The crown of my career would definitely be the Premier League,” he concluded.
“I have won championships, played in all three of the strongest European competitions, so the Premier League would definitely be the pinnacle in terms of coaching. Of course, any offer from the ‘top five’ is a great achievement. But England is several levels above any other league.”
