Newcastle United won the Carabao Cup at the weekend, after overcoming Liverpool in the final at Wembley.

Dan Burn opened the scoring for the Magpies in the 45th minute before Alexander Isak doubled the lead in the second half. Federico Chiesa’s netted a late goal for the Reds.

With a win over Liverpool, Newcastle ended their 70 year long trophy drought. Isak was the difference between the two teams in the end.

A day after the Tyneside club’s success, the striker joined the Sweden national team for the ongoing international break. They have been training in Marbella, and the 25-year-old spoke to Swedish reporters, with today’s Svenska Dagbladet relaying his comments.

The frontman explained it was an “indescribable day” for him to help Newcastle win a trophy in front of their fans and his family at Wembley. The reporters then pointed out to him that some of the Magpies supporters were ‘crying with happiness’.

When responding to that, Isak explained what aspect of Newcastle’s EFL Cup success pleased him most.

“I think that’s what meant the most, actually, for me. Almost all the fans that you looked up at were crying. And yes, 70 years … That’s a long time. So, I almost think that’s what means the most, when you see how much it means to people,” he said.

The former Real Sociedad man said Newcastle fans gave the team an extra push in the final.

“It felt like we gave each other energy. We gave them energy in the way we played. Our fans get excited at the slightest thing when you win duels and celebrate a little extra. And they gave back to us with all the scarves that were waved,” Isak explained.

Isak won the Copa del Rey [2020] with Real Sociedad earlier in his career but sees the Magpies’ latest success as bigger.

“This one ends up somewhere much higher. The other one was without fans during the pandemic, and here I had a little more influence on the match,” he added.
