On Boxing Day, we relayed news from Italy that Manchester United are pressing to sign Joshua Zirkzee. Two days later, Il Resto del Carlino reported the Red Devils are ahead of other clubs in the race for the Bologna star.

The striker has managed eight goals and four assists from 22 games this season and his fine form has seen him draw attention from several clubs.

Manchester United are included in the list, according to a fresh report from Il Resto Del Carlino, relayed by 1000 Cuori Rossoblu.

Taking this into account, it’s said the Serie A side are looking for a striker who can become Zirkzee’s successor. His contract lasts until 2026 and the report adds Bologna have set a €50m asking price, while Bayern Munich have a buyback option set at €40m.

Sky Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg took to X to provide more details about Manchester United’s plans for the 22-year-old.

It’s claimed ‘talks took place’ between Erik ten Hag’s side and Bologna for Zirkzee, but his employer won’t let him leave in January.

Plettenberg adds the Dutchman ‘can leave’ after this season as there’s a €40m release clause.

The Premier League side will have him on their agenda for next summer as their bosses have a ‘high opinion’ of his qualities and potential to further develop his game.
