Three days ago, Rangers confirmed the appointment of Nils Koppen as their new director of football, to aid manager Philippe Clement, and he will take charge at Ibrox from the start of next month.
The incoming Rangers director started as a head of academy at Lommel United in 2014 and then moved to KRC Genk in 2016, to become the head of youth recruitment. He also had a spell with the Belgian football association before moving to PSV Eindhoven in 2018.
At the Dutch club, the 38-year-old started as a youth scout and then took up various roles before being promoted as PSV’s head of scouting earlier this year. His ability to identify young talents for the Dutch club caught Rangers’ attention.
That’s according to Het Laatste Nieuws, who are pleased the Belgian will move to Rangers as they believe they have recruited a top candidate for the director of football role.
Focusing on Koppen’s career and his next move to Rangers, the outlet says his career is ‘moving forward at breakneck speed’. He will meet his compatriot, Clement, at Rangers, who was appointed as the club’s manager in October.
HLN claim Koppen, along with Clement and the Rangers’ board, will be responsible for the club’s signings, where the focus would be on identifying talented youngsters.
They add these players should potentially help Rangers raise funds through their future sales in the long run. This is a ‘crucial role’ and the newspaper explains that Koppen’s new job at Rangers is ‘tailor made for him’.
Rangers supporters would be pleased to know that their incoming director has shown ‘he is worth at the top level’, even though Koppen is ‘unknown to the general public’.
