Italian goalkeeper Marco Amelia spent the last season at Chelsea, but didn’t make a single appearance for the London club.

According to Italian media outlet SportItalia (via TMW), Amelia is set to undergo a trial at Sunderland.

Sunderland’s first choice goalkeeper Vito Mannone is expected to be out with injury for a few months.

David Moyes has been left with young Jordan Pickford and Maksymilian Stryjek, but could very well use the experience of free agent Amelia.

The 34-year-old could also be tempted by the chance of cementing his place in the team in the absence of Mannone.

Sunderland failed to sign a goalkeeper before the transfer deadline, and are now forced to look for out of contract players.

Amelia has played for several clubs in Italy, and has also represented the Italian national team 9 times.
