Earlier this week we covered an outburst from Alexandre Mendy’s camp over his move to Sunderland stalling, and SM Caen apparently not sticking to previous agreements made with the player.
Mendy was Ligue 2 top scorer last season, and his representatives feel he was assured he would be allowed to leave, to the destination of his choosing.
Last month, the striker explained why he’d chosen Sunderland. He said he had an approach from Saudi Arabia but wasn’t interested in purely money. Instead, after watching every series of Sunderland ‘Til I Die, he’d come to the very strong conclusion that the Black Cats are the team for him.
Then it emerged in France that Caen had been aiming for as much as €5m, but the Saudi offer was just €500k and Sunderland came in at less than €1m.
So, his camp this week called the situation a disgrace.
Nothing appears to have happened since then, and now French journalist Mohamed Toubache-Ter has said the following on social media: ‘Furthermore, Stade Malherbe Caen wants to keep its striker Alexandre Mendy. A file very poorly managed by Olivier Pickeu. By the way, if the sale had to take so long, the latter is responsible. It’s in the past, Caen is liberated & the future is serene.
‘The new shareholders have to deal with Pickeu’s poor management of this issue, there are things that have been said and we know the rest. After that, Sunderland’s offer is ridiculous… Mendy is not a packet of crisps from LIDL, eh?’
Those new shareholders are Kylian Mbappe and his family, just in case this saga needed any more drama.
