Alexandre Mendy to Sunderland is already one of our favourite transfer sagas of the summer.
That’s for several reasons, and it’s worth listing some.
- He’s come out and said he’d rather play for the Black Cats than cash in from a Saudi Arabia move.
- The striker watched every series of Sunderland ‘Til I Die to help him make his decision to join them.
- SM Caen, his current club, believed they could get €5m this summer, but their best offer is from the Championship club and it’s for less than €1m.
Now we have a huge twist. Caen have been available for purchase for a while, and they’ve needed an injection of cash to help them progress.
That’s partly why Mendy has been allowed to look for a new club, and probably partly why Caen have been unrealistic with their idea of a transfer fee.
Well, they don’t have to worry about funding right now because they’ve just been bought by Kylian Mbappe.
Yes, you read that right.
L’Equipe report the Real Madrid striker will this week become the new majority shareholder at SM Caen.
Whether that changes Mendy’s mind on his future and Sunderland remains to be seen. With him being Ligue 2 top scorer last season and the most valuable player at the club, Mbappe will certainly be taking a look at Mendy.
