Earlier this year, several English clubs were linked to the Gent striker Laurent Depoitre. Tottenham, West Brom and Middlesbrough were all said to be interested in the Belgian, and his agent said he wanted a move to the Premier League.
Depoitre ended up signing for Porto, but his desire of playing in the UK is still a subject.
In an interview with L’Avenir (via O Jogo), the striker said: “England always attracted me and it would’ve been beautiful for me. But, if a club like FC Porto knock on your door, you can’t refuse”.
“I only had concrete offers from the English second tier. It was a risk to wait for the Premier League. And I’m very happy at FC Porto”.
So it suggests that Tottenham and West Brom never bid for him, but as Middlesbrough were in the Championship last season, it’s possible they are the ones mentioned by Lapoitre.
In any case, the player now has a €40m release clause and is very unlikely to leave Porto anytime soon.
