Calciomercato report Pepe Reina is now ‘a step away’ from Aston Villa.

There’s been claims over the past day from both the English and Italian sport media about a possible Villa swoop for the goalkeeper. Having seen Tom Heaton pick up an injury, it would be no surprise if Dean Smith’s side bring in a January replacement.

As far as Calciomercato have it, Reina is about to end his experience in Italian football. In recent hours his agent has been negotiating with AC Milan so the 37 year old can move to the Premier League.

It’s stated he’ll sign a six month contract, but could be staying in the Midlands for longer than that. There’s a clause which would trigger another 12 months should Aston Villa avoid relegation to the Championship this season.

Reina is said to feel ‘physically ready’ for what he believes will be a ‘complex challenge’.

In the ‘next few hours’ the parties involved will try to close an agreement and reach ‘white smoke’ on the move.
