Catalan newspaper Sport has a piece in their Wednesday edition looking at the situation of Jeremy Mathieu.
It’s explained that the Frenchman was Barcelona’s first defensive substitute last year, the go-to-man when the club needed an alternative outside of the absolute first choice.
However, Sport believe that’s going to change an awful lot. Samuel Umtiti’s arrival puts Mathieu further down the pecking order, and it’s not the only problem. Having played left back previously for Barcelona, Sport say he won’t get that chance again because Lucas Digne has also signed, but then Mathieu was never really a left back anyway.
An exit is being considered and Liverpool are pushed forward as being interested, with Sport saying Jurgen Klopp can get his man for around €10m. The claim almost certainly rests on earlier ones from France.
Basiktas are also in the picture, but the Istanbul club are surely a less attractive option after events over the past week.
