Southampton attacker Léo Scienza has told the Austrian media he’s grateful for comments made by Coventry City manager Frank Lampard.
The Chelsea legend praised the Brazilian in his post-match press conference following Coventry City’s 1-1 draw with Southampton last month.
Speaking to Transfermarkt.at, Scienza was asked about what Lampard has said, and how he felt about the praise.
The 27-year-old said he was pleased that somebody of Lampard’s standing in the game notice his ability.
Scienza then said the Coventry City manager explained he’ll be watching his progress.
“I was very surprised when I saw the interview. During the game we argued a bit then we met in the dressing room corridor. He told me that he didn’t know me, but I was very good and he would continue to watch me.
“Of course, it makes me happy when such a legend says that. After his special playing career, he is also doing a great job as a coach. A day later, friends sent me his interview. I am very grateful to him for the words,” said the Southampton player.
Southampton identified player due to German connections
Scienza signed for Southampton during the summer transfer window following a season with FC Heidenheim.
At the time we covered reports Southampton sporting director Johannes Spors and chief scout Tim Lederer had identified him from their time in the Bundesliga.
He’d previously played for a number of German teams after initially joining FC Schalke 04 II in 2020.
Last season the forward impressed for FC Heidenheim, ensuring they didn’t drop down to Bundesliga 2. He scored a last gasp winner in the play-offs which saved his side from relegation.
His performances for FC Heidenheim earned him a transfer to the Saints and he signed a four-year contract with them in September.
Since arriving in England, he’s made 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals.
However, he’s been unable to change Southampton’s fortunes after their relegation last year. The south coast club are currently 15th in the Championship table, and look destined for another season in the second division.
