In their Wednesday edition, French newspaper L’Equipe have an article on PSG’s potential transfer business. It’s mainly about Wolfsburg’s Julian Draxler, with PSG now being at the forefront of a very limited race to sign the player.
At the bottom is a line to say Virgil van Dijk is back on the agenda for PSG, with the Southampton defender being an option to sign in the summer, with January not ruled out.
Van Dijk has been linked with several clubs recently, thanks to his fine form for Southampton. PSG sounds attractive enough, but it may not be the best option to choose should the Dutchman fancy an exit.
Claude Puel, with his wealth of French football knowledge, will be able to explain to Van Dijk that not only do PSG have Thiago Silva and Marquinhos as their main central defensive options… they also have politics. Should Van Dijk displace one to the bench then there’d be grumbling in the club’s corridors, and he could even find himself benched more often than not.
A prominent role at Southampton has led to a prominent role with the Netherlands national team. Should Van Dijk be looking toward the Southampton exit then he’s surely keen on a move that won’t turn into something he could regret.
