Southampton are no longer dealing only with Premier League interest or exploratory calls from Brazil when it comes to Léo Scienza.
Brazilian sides Corinthians, Grêmio and Bahia had all made enquiries for the 27-year-old recently, but the feeling around those approaches was always that they were unlikely to go much further.
Southampton’s valuation around €29m (£25m) already pushed the player well beyond what most Brazilian clubs can realistically spend.
But the story has now moved into a very different financial territory, because Flamengo have entered the race. And unlike the Brazilian clubs previously linked, they are one of the few sides in South America who could realistically put enough money on the table to make Southampton pay attention.
That changes things a bit.
Flamengo have already shown they can spend big
The Rio club shattered the Brazilian transfer record in January when they signed Lucas Paquetá from West Ham for €42m (£36m). That move alone showed Flamengo can operate at a level few clubs in Brazil can match.
So while a move for Léo Scienza is still far from advanced, this is the first Brazilian link that feels financially believable.
According to RTI Esporte, Flamengo are looking at the Southampton attacker as a possible replacement for Everton Cebolinha, whose future remains uncertain heading towards the summer window.
Sporting director José Boto is said to be a fan of the player’s profile, especially because of his versatility. That is much appreciated by manager Leonardo Jardim.
Southampton facing pressure from multiple directions
Léo Scienza’s season has turned him into one of Southampton’s most valuable attacking players, and the list of interested clubs keeps growing.
As we covered earlier, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, Fulham, Everton and Leeds United have all been tracking him closely. Scouts from those clubs have attended Southampton matches in recent weeks as part of deeper evaluations.
Meanwhile, the lastest Brazilian update also mention Bayer Leverkusen, Olympique Marseille, Real Betis and Spartak Moscow among clubs watching the situation.
The numbers explain the attention. Léo Scienza has produced seven goals and ten assists in 42 appearances this season while playing a major role in Southampton’s promotion push and impressive FA Cup campaign.
Importantly for Southampton, the Brazilian reportedly remains under contract until June 2028. That gives the club a strong hand and removes any pressure to sell quickly.
Flamengo still face a difficult task
Even with Flamengo’s spending power, this would not be an easy operation.
Southampton are still fully focused on promotion and are considering offering Léo Scienza improved terms if they return to the Premier League. The player himself has also repeatedly spoken about his desire to establish himself at the top level in Europe.
That could end up being the biggest obstacle of all.
Flamengo may be able to afford the transfer fee in a way other Brazilian clubs cannot, but convincing both Southampton and the player is a very different challenge.
What happens next
This is probably the first time in the entire Léo Scienza story that Southampton are facing interest from a Brazilian club capable of making a genuinely serious move.
Whether Flamengo actually decide to push remains to be seen. Much will depend on Everton Cebolinha’s future and how aggressively the club want to attack the market.
But what started as Premier League monitoring has now become a much bigger transfer story involving clubs from England, mainland Europe and Brazil.
In the meanwhile, Southampton are increasingly aware that keeping hold of Léo Scienza may become difficult if the summer market heats up even further.
