Leicester City’s collapse into League One is already forcing changes behind the scenes, and Patson Daka now looks increasingly likely to leave on a free transfer this summer.

The Zambia international has struggled for consistency since arriving from RB Salzburg in a deal worth around £23m (€27m) in 2021. However, Leicester’s relegation has changed the picture completely.

Daka is now approaching the end of his contract, which expires on June 30th, and Spanish reports say he has no intention of renewing. That situation is now attracting interest from La Liga.

Eyes from Spain

According to El Sevillista, Sevilla are already negotiating for the striker and see him as an attractive market opportunity because there would be no transfer fee involved.

Valencia are also said to be interested, which could create competition for his signature in the coming weeks.

Patson Daka’s Leicester spell has never fully taken off. He has shown flashes of the pace and direct running that made him one of Salzburg’s standout forwards, but instability at the club has not helped.

Leicester changed managers several times during his stay, while the team itself moved from Premier League ambitions to a dramatic slide down the divisions.

Now the financial reality of League One football is expected to trigger an exodus.

Sevilla see market opportunity

Patson Daka still fits a profile many clubs value. He is quick, experienced in European competitions and capable of stretching defensive lines.

Sevilla reportedly believe those attributes could help bring more verticality to their attack after several inconsistent seasons in front of goal.

The financial side also matters. Sevilla are operating carefully in the market and signing a free agent would allow them to prioritise spending elsewhere.

However, the absence of a transfer fee does not automatically make the move cheap. Signing bonuses, wages and agent commissions could still make the operation expensive.

That is where Leicester may feel some frustration. The Foxes paid significant money for Daka only a few years ago. He arrived with strong numbers from Austria, where he scored 68 goals in 125 matches for Salzburg.

Yet Leicester are now in danger of losing him for nothing after relegation accelerated the uncertainty around the club.

What happens next

Patson Daka may still attract interest beyond Spain. At 27, he is entering years where clubs can still justify offering a long-term contract, especially for a player with Champions League experience and international pedigree. His pace also remains a major selling point.

For Leicester, though, the story is another reminder of how quickly things have unravelled. A player signed during the club’s Premier League years now appears set to walk away for free while the Foxes prepare for life in the third tier.
