Southampton contacted Benfica last week regarding a move for Nuno Tavares but will have to move quickly to get him ahead of Benfica.

That’s according to A Bola, who say the possibility of a move is ‘still alive’ despite Napoli closing in on a deal.

They explain that Benfica and Napoli continue to negotiate a deal for the 21-year-old left-back, who the Reds are determined to sell this summer.

They want a fee of around €15m, and the two clubs are coming to terms on an agreement, but negotiations are not easy.

Napoli remain the ‘best placed’ to sign the Portuguese defender, but Southampton are also in the running and also ‘contacted’ Benfica about a move last week.

They wanted to ‘know the conditions’ for a transfer and that ‘track is still alive’ despite things advancing with Napoli.

Brighton and Newcastle were interested in the recent past, but Benfica didn’t want to negotiate at that moment in time, and the situation with those two has now changed.

If everything goes according to Benfica’s expectations, a deal will be done before the start of pre-season, which is scheduled for Friday.

At the minute, it appears that deal will be with Napoli, but there is still a chance for Southampton to jump in and get their man if they wish.
