When Leeds United bought Junior Firpo from Barcelona, everyone expected the defender to become a key player at the club.
However, since then, the Elland Road side were relegated to the Championship, and injuries have taken their toll, meaning the 27-year-old hasn’t played anywhere near as much as expected this season.
That’s why some clubs have started taking an interest in the Leeds left-back, like Real Sociedad, as reported by Mundo Deportivo Gipuzkoa on Monday.
The news comes after Aihen Muñoz tore his anterior cruciate ligament recently, leaving the Spanish side with just Arsenal loanee Kieran Tierney in the role.
They need someone to help them cover the end of the season and perhaps even beyond, as the Scottish player is expected to return to England once his deal there comes to an end.
That’s why, among the many names linked by Mundo Deportivo, we find Firpo on the list, who has been in and out of the team at Leeds.
While the idea of a loan for a player like Manchester City’s Sergio Gomez is an option, they could also pursue a more ‘firm bet’ like the Elland Road player, although they know that targeting someone like the Dominican would ‘involve a higher cost’.
The problem for Real Sociedad, and they will be aware of this, is that Firpo has undergone something of a resurgence over the past three league games, starting all of them and picking up four assists along the way.
Therefore, despite him being a target, this could be the worst time for them to try and make a move, since there could be a big reluctance to let him go at Elland Road following his latest performances.
