Benfica beat Sporting 2-1 on Sunday evening in the Lisbon derby. Unsurprisingly, the match attracted club scouts from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
What may be a surprise is that among them was Sheffield Wednesday. Carlos Carvalhal’s club are currently second in the Championship, and so promotion to the Premier League is still very much a possibility.
Sheffield Wednesday often scout in Portugal, which makes sense given Carvalhal, but to watch Benfica and Sporting in one of the biggest matches of the season is optimistic window shopping. Both clubs fielded the strongest eleven they possibly could and so there weren’t a lot of fringe players on display.
Nearly every player on the pitch would be out of Sheffield Wednesday’s reach, with perhaps Luisao the most sign-able. The 35 year old defender almost joined Wolves during the summer but the deal collapsed over wages requested.
Maybe the Sheffield Wednesday official just fancied watching the match and, as tickets were scarce, decided to scout.
A Bola say that Sheffield Wednesday were joined by the likes of Juventus, PSG, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.
