Sam Allardyce arrived at Crystal Palace just before Christmas with expectations placed on him to save the club from relegation… because that’s what Allardyce does.
However, since then Palace have failed to win a Premier League game and have picked up a solitary point. It leaves the club two points from safety and questions have started to be asked.
Betway’s Blow the Whistle has had a look at whether Allardyce can save Crystal Palace, and offered two opposing viewpoints.
Jack Green argues there’s no better man for the job, given the manager’s experience of being in similar situations. Jack expects Allardyce to sort Palace’s defensive issues out, and when he does everything will start looking a lot rosier.
Arguing the other way, Tom Clee isn’t so sure: “The thing that shook me was his quotes the other week. He said he wasn’t scared of losing his job, he was scared of losing his own unblemished record of never being relegated from the Premier League. That suggests he’s only in it for himself and it’s hardly going to do much to inspire his players.”
That sounds more than a little harsh. Allardyce was probably trying to get over that the money, his contract, isn’t more important than his own pride and record, and surely that can only benefit Crystal Palace.
It’s better than a manager coming in, taking the money, being ready for the sack and compensation if it goes wrong, and not really feeling it a stain on themselves if Palace are relegated.
