Rubén Selles will find “better opportunities” in future despite his miserable time at Sheffield United.

That’s according to Gustavo Puerta, speaking to Flashscore, who got to know the Portuguese boss well at Hull City last season.

Selles currently finds himself out of work after being sacked by Sheffield United in the middle of last month.

He was appointed in the summer after the surprising departure of Chris Wilder. It was his fourth job in England after originally starting as assistant manager at Southampton.

Selles was then caretaker manager over two spells and permanent manager, before time at Reading and then Hull last year.

The move to Brammall Lane did not prove to be a long-term one, though. He was sacked last month after they lost all six of their opening games, including a 5-0 defeat to Ipswich Town. Wilder was then brought back for a third spell.

“Better opportunities will come”

The question is what happens next. Puerta was a regular under him at Hully, making 21 appearances and 1494 minutes in total. That’s the most he’s managed under any manager in his career so far and he sees better on the horizon.

“The coach was very good to me from the moment I arrived at Hull,” he said.

“Aside from being a good coach, he’s an excellent person. We were always in constant communication. He told me what he wanted from me, what I needed to improve. I played many games with him, more as a starter than on the bench.

“He’s a very intelligent person and strategist. He always plans games to win them. He’s a manager who likes to have a lot of possession but also likes to be direct. Regarding his departure from Sheffield (United), I think it’s just a football thing.

“This often happens in teams, and even more so with managers. Things don’t happen in five or four games, and the one who’s always singled out is the manager. But that doesn’t mean he’s not an excellent coach. I think better opportunities will come his way.”
