With a release clause of £25m in his contract, it was presumed that there would be plenty of interest in Toby Alderweireld this summer.

That never proved to be the case, though, with no Champions League sides stepping forward to take advantage. Instead, it has been Roma who have pushed hardest for his signature.

The Serie A side have been linked throughout the summer, and it appears they are not giving up the pursuit just yet.

Gazzetta Dello Sport report today that they are continuing to try and get a deal with Tottenham done as Alderweireld is the man new manager Paulo Fonseca would prefer the club to sign.

Former Spurs chief Franco Baldini is leading the charge, and despite him having a good relationship with those in charge at White Hart Lane, they can’t get a deal done.

Spurs are refusing to lower their asking price from €25m (the clause has now expired, and was £25m), with Roma’s last offer being €20m. They don’t want to go higher than that despite the fact their chance at getting alternatives are fading.

Roma do have an alternative in Real Madrid’s Nacho, but Gazzetta say that a surprise could be around the corner, hinting that they feel Roma can reach an agreement for Alderweireld at some point.
