Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has been criticised for his mistake in the Netherlands clash with Greece after nearly gifting his opponents a way back into the game.

The Netherlands beat Greece 1-0 last night thanks to a Virgil van Dijk penalty in the 93rd minute after a close game between the two sides.

It was a less than impressive performance from Ronald Koeman’s side, who faced criticism after the game, with ESPN’s Hans Kraay focusing some of his on Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven.

He was only a late substitute in the game, coming on with fifteen minutes remaining to replace Quilindschy Hartman at left back.

That’s not a natural position for the defender, who is primarily a centre-back and has been starring for Tottenham in that position this season following a summer move from Wolfsburg.

That showed too as he gave away possession cheaply late in the game, a moment which led to a Greece breakaway and the opportunity to take the lead, which fortunately for him they did not.

It was a ‘big mistake’ that shouldn’t have happened, though, and Kraay was less than impressed, insisting that he should remain as a centre-back and nothing more, as shown at Tottenham.

“Really a ridiculous and worthless ball. How can you make it up?” he said.

“This is a really ridiculous ball at every football level in the Netherlands, including the lowest of the low. Chip it on the striker or give it to Tijjani Reijnders in front of you, but this…

“At FC Volendam in the Kitchen Champion Division he also started at left back and he did that very well, but he is much better in the middle. He also plays for Tottenham, and they really run away with him there.”
