Everton star Amadou Onana needs to work on his game to help him avoid cards in games, following his sending off for Belgium in the win over Austria.
That’s according to journalist Marc Degryse, who says the player’s continued ability to pick up yellows and reds is a weak point he needs to strengthen.
Onana has established himself as a key player for Belgium under Domenico Tedesco, who has made him the focal point of a new look midfield.
He’s been rewarded for that faith with a series of impressive performances by the youngster but there has been one major negative and that is his ability to accumulate cards.
His red card in the clash with Austria last night, which was for two yellows rather than a straight red, was his first sending off for his country but the fourth and fifth time he’s picked up bookings in just nine appearances for his country.
It’s a problem for the Everton star, to say the least, who was also missing for the crucial final group game in the World Cup after picking up bookings against Canada and Morocco.
He will now be spending Belgium’s next game out of action as well, a problem Tedesco will have to overcome, leading Degryse to call for improvement from the Everton midfielder.
“By the way, Onana got another yellow card, which remains a problem as far as I’m concerned,” he said.
“At the World Cup he was already suspended for the crucial match against Croatia. A player who is so important to the team cannot always afford that.
“It was almost predictable that he would leave after the break, it is really a work point for Onana. In this way he brought Austria back into the match.”
