Liverpool showed keen interest in signing Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi in the recently concluded window.
The Spain international has a €60m release clause in his contract. Liverpool were willing to activate it, but the deal didn’t take shape due to the player’s will.
Zubimendi rejected the opportunity to join Liverpool, preferring to continue with the La Liga side.
Wednesday’s edition of Marca have published a lengthy interview with the midfielder. The majority of the interview focuses on Spain’s successor at the Euros and their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Serbia and Switzerland.
It was no surprise to see Marca discuss the reports linking Zubimendi with a move away from La Real. Liverpool made firm attempts to secure his services, but they had to give up after the player decided to stay at Real Sociedad.
The newspaper asked Zubimendi what his friends thought about the summer exit links and whether they had anything to say to him.
“No, no, my friends are clear that whatever I decide will be the best. There is no pressure whatsoever,” he said.
When asked what the Spanish club means to him, Zubimendi explained: “Real Sociedad for me is my life, I think I have spent half my life there. A lot of what I am is part of La Real, it is my life.”
The Spaniard joined the club’s academy in 2011 and was promoted to their senior team in 2019.
