Following the announcement that Thibaut Courtois would miss most, if not all, of the upcoming season following a severe knee injury, Real Madrid are looking for a new goalkeeper and have turned their attention to Leeds United.

Yes, you read that correctly, as Sport in Spain claim that the La Liga giants are eyeing up Illan Meslier as an emergency arrival to help them while the Belgian recovers.

It’s explained that Real Madrid have two lists of players they are looking at, with the first being more experienced options while the second are ‘younger and more economic profiles’, which the Leeds United star falls into.

They recall how important Meslier was under the Bielsa era and beyond, and while Sam Allardyce decided to make do without the Frenchman during his brief stint as manager, few will deny the potential and ability he has shown over the past three years.

He had little to do with the fact Leeds were sub-par under Jesse Marsch and were incredibly leaky on the pitch, and the fact he has ‘physical characteristics similar’ to Courtois could be useful.

What works in Meslier’s favour is his price, as he could now be a ‘market opportunity’ following the Whites’ relegation to the Championship.

While he is valued at €20m on Transfermarkt, the belief is Real Madrid ‘could get him at a good price’, even when ‘taking into account he is still 23 years old and has his whole future ahead of him’.
