Club Brugge striker Ferran Jutgla has revealed they read about teammate Igor Thiago’s move to Brentford in the newspaper and were as much in the dark as everyone else.
The striker has been speaking to Het Nieuwsblad about the striker and his move to Brentford, which was confirmed last week.
Thiago is set to join the Bees in a €37m deal in the summer after Brentford and Brugge did a deal in secret, something his agent has even admitted to being proud about.
The announcement certainly caught most off guard, especially after Brentford had spent most of the January transfer window negotiating a similar deal for Brugge winger Antonio Nusa.
That was a very public affair and appears to have helped cover their tracks when it came to Thiago, who will likely be the replacement for Ivan Toney at the club.
He’ll arrive in England after a superb first season in Belgium so far that has seen him score 26 goals and register four assists in 41 games in all competitions to date.
He’s undoubtedly been the star of the show and Jutgla, who has had to accept a place on the bench because of those performances, insists he’s more than deserving of the big-money move.
“I scored less this season than last year, so it is logical that the competition remains unchanged,” He said.
“Igor (Thiago) has simply performed phenomenally. Not normal. He also works extremely hard, which makes him a joy to play with.
“His transfer to Brentford is therefore well deserved. Although it was a surprise for us too. (laughs) We read it in the newspaper just like you did.”
