Sometimes transfer rumours come about out of nowhere, an innocuous comment starting a slippery slope to a full blown rumour before anyone has a chance to think about it.

And that’s what appears to have happened with Bild, who are today suggesting Chelsea could make a move for Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Here’s the story. Chelsea played Gladbach in a highly entertaining 2-2 draw on Saturday and Sommer was the star of the show for the Germans.

This led to plenty of praise from Frank Lampard, who Bild report praised the goalkeeper after the game, labelling him ‘fantastic’ and saying Chelsea would have won were it not for his performance.

Bild have picked up on that praise and suggested that Gladbach should be careful as it shows Chelsea might be interested in the Switzerland international.

They say Sommer has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, was ‘hotly courted’ by English sides last summer and has been thinking about a transfer, and this praise from Lampard could start it all over again.

Bild report Gladbach wouldn’t sell this summer anyway, Sommer is too essential, but they’ve got it in their heads that Lampard was so impressed by his performance that he might want to take him to Stamford Bridge.

A move to England is described as ‘quite possible’.

Except, that makes no sense. First and foremost, Chelsea are under a transfer ban and can’t sign Sommer even if they wanted to.

Secondly, they already have a top goalkeeper in Kepa Arrizabalaga. The young Spaniard enjoyed a stellar first season in England, on the field tantrums aside, and there’s no indication Chelsea or Lampard want to replace him.

This is very much Bild getting carried away when, in reality, Lampard was praising an excellent performance from a rival player. File this one firmly under not happening.
