AC Milan’s CEO Marco Fassone and sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli attended last night’s Champions League match between Real Madrid and Sporting.
The AC Milan duo were interested in a number of players, who they could sign for the Serie A club in the near future.
According to Italian website Gazzamercato, one of the players being monitored is Sunderland defender Sebastian Coates.
The former Liverpool defender signed for Sporting on loan at the start of the season, but the Portuguese club have an option to make it permanent at the end of the season.
Coates started the game last night for Sporting in their 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid, and he’s been in impressive form since arriving in Lisbon. Sporting are keen to make the deal permanent and use their bargain €5m option, but there’s been bumps in the road recently relating to wages and agents.
If Sporting can’t find agreement, or if Coates decides that elsewhere would be more attractive, it could be excellent news for Sunderland and David Moyes. Coates has a Sunderland contract lasting until June 2019, on the open market he’d be worth far more than €5m.
