Liverpool may have been handed a huge boost in the potential pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, with Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß insisting a deal for him is “probably impossible.”
Hoeneß has been speaking to BR24 Sport in Germany about the situation at Bayern as they seek a new manager in the summer to replace Thomas Tuchel.
The German giants came to an agreement with Tuchel to part ways in the summer after a difficult few months in which there has been a clear split in the dressing room over his management.
Alonso has been named as the man at the top of their list of replacements, having shone at Bayer Leverkusen this season and led them to the top of the Bundesliga, ten points clear of Bayern.
All reports have made it clear that it is likely to be a battle between Bayern and Liverpool for the former midfielder’s signature this summer, should it actually be possible to get him out of Leverkusen.
It seems, though, Bayern aren’t confident of making that happen, at least if Hoeneß latest comments are to be believed.
“We’ll see if we can do that this year, it will be very difficult, not to say probably impossible,” he said.
“Personally, I, we all, extremely appreciate Xabi Alonso, (but he) is currently in the process of becoming German champions.
“(Alonso would be) more inclined to continue because he doesn’t want to, let’s say, leave it behind now. If he had had two or three years more success it would probably be easier to get him out of there.”
