Manchester City have confirmed Kevin De Bruyne will leave the Etihad when his contract expires at the end of June.
The Belgium international’s contract situation, experience and qualities make him an interesting option for several clubs. He’s already been linked to a few sides in Europe and across the world.
Marseille are one of the clubs to be credited with interest in the Manchester City star for the summer window.
Pablo Longoria, the French club’s president, was asked about the possibility of signing the 33-year-old and L’Equipe have relayed his comments.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side finished second in the table, 19 points behind winners Paris Saint-Germain, and have qualified for the Champions League. Longoria has ruled out a move for the Manchester City midfielder, mainly due to his high wages.
De Bruyne is one of the top earners in the Premier League and Longoria feels his arrival could break the balance and the club’s good momentum which has been built over this season.
“Honestly, I don’t know if there are any discussions with Kevin De Bruyne,” he said.
“And I’m not going to single out any specific case. If we bring in a player with a salary much higher than the players we have in the squad today, players who qualified us for the Champions League, it would destroy all the balance we’ve built and all the good things, all the good momentum we’ve had this season.
“From the club’s point of view, it would be a complete lack of respect for the players who made this Champions League qualification possible and who created this positive dynamic.”
De Bruyne hasn’t yet confirmed his next destination and there should be clarity on this in the coming weeks.
