Italy manager Roberto Mancini has admitted he told striker Gianluca Scamacca that he will suffer at West Ham United.
The Italy forward completed a £32.4m move to the London Stadium last month, with West Ham beating Paris Saint Germain to the 23-year-old’s signature.
He arrives in London with a growing reputation from his time in Serie A, where he managed 24 goals in 65 appearances for Genoa and Sassuolo respectively.
The pressure is on him to finally be the striker that West Ham have long been looking for, the Hammers having spent vast fortunes on various players down the years that haven’t worked out, despite their reputations in Europe.
The hope is that Scamacca can finally be the man to break that cycle and provide much-needed relief for Michail Antonio.
Whether he can do so remains to be seen but one man who will be watching is Italy manager Mancini, who handed Scamacca his debut last year and admits he’s already sent him some words of advice.
“[I told him] that the Premier is the best tournament,” he told Gazzetta Dello Sport.
“To prepare to suffer because the first months will be very hard. Settling in will not be easy. But if he resists and succeeds, then he will become another player.”
