Last month, reports coming out of Spain discussed Chelsea wanting to sign Barcelona’s Gavi in the summer.
The Blues have to appoint a new manager first before carrying out operations in the next window. They showed the exit door to Graham Potter last month and appointed Frank Lampard as interim manager until the end of this season.
A ‘confidential’ report from Tuesday’s Sport states Chelsea will define Potter’s successor in the next few days.
It’s said Mauricio Pochettino is the ‘strongest candidate’ to lead Todd Boehly’s new project. After investing heavily in the last two windows, the Premier League side are going to have another revolution in the summer.
Pochettino has ‘very clear’ plans to rebuild Chelsea’s squad for next season and wants to start with midfield. This is where the Spain international would fit in.
It’s claimed the Argentine ‘really likes’ the 18-year-old and considers the Barca star as a ‘very interesting’ player for the Premier League.
Last September, Barca extended Gavi’s deal until 2026 but his renewal hasn’t been accepted by La Liga because the Catalan club haven’t met the fair play conditions. As it stands, he’s back on his youth team contract, which expires in June.
Sport state Barca intend to register Gavi as soon as they balance their books. The midfielder also has no intention of leaving the Camp Nou.
This won’t make it easy for Chelsea to carry out a deal, even though Pochettino would be keen to have Gavi at his disposal.
