When Todd Boehly took over at Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel was still in charge, it quickly became apparent that Romelu Lukaku staying wasn’t going to be an option.
The Belgian’s big return to Stamford Bridge hadn’t gone to plan, and the money spent to bring him back was all but a waste, as the star striker wanted to leave just a year after.
A return to Inter was organised on loan, with it quickly suggested that there was an agreement between Chelsea and their Serie A counterparts regarding a potential extension by another year.
Since then, however, things haven’t gone to plan, with Lukaku spending most of the season either injured or struggling to find the back of the net, which has caused some concerns at the San Siro.
Corriere dello Sport cover it on Wednesday, and bluntly open their article by saying ‘this is not the Lukaku Inzaghi had in mind’ when the manager pushed to work with him.
In fact, Inter are currently ‘oriented to sending Big Rom back to Chelsea at the end of the season’.
The striker ‘hasn’t scored for almost four months’, which is why ‘the return to Chelsea at this moment is quite probable’.
That’s because to renew what has been a very expensive deal for them, they need guarantees that are ‘currently absent’, like him showcasing some form that could justify him staying.
They have spent €20m ‘gross’ so far to ‘give Big Rom a second chance’, and he hasn’t repaid them with what they expected.
While there are still a few months left for him to rectify that, it’s not looking great for the Chelsea striker.
