This morning, Portuguese outlet Correio da Manhã claimed that Sporting were trying to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger from Manchester United on a free transfer.

They said that the player’s representative was travelling to Lisbon today to discuss the possibilities of the move.

A few hours later, Diário de Notícias reported it too. Their story said the German was available to talk, since he’s not part of José Mourinho’s plans for the season, and Manchester United would help Sporting to pay part of his salary.

Although Diário de Notícias said the type of he transfer were still unknown, having Manchester United pay for part of the player’s wages makes clear that it would be a loan deal.

Then it was time for the Daily Record to published it. Duncan Castles said the player was offered to Sporting by Manchester United and the transfer shouldn’t cost a penny for the Portuguese side. It was claimed that Schweinsteiger still needs to be convinced, though.

All the stories are presented as independent.

Everything sounds at a very early stage, but the idea is that Manchester United would want to get rid of the German international before the window closes.

Sporting can’t afford his high wages and maybe it means that a free transfer isn’t enough, and a loan deal sounds more likely. The general impression is that Schweinsteiger’s desire is more decisive than anything else.

And given his desire is to stay at Manchester United, it’s going to be very difficult to do a deal.
