Earlier this morning, we covered the latest Turkish slant on Wout Weghorst moving from Besiktas, where he’s on loan from Burnley, to Manchester United.
The latest claim was that it would be a permanent move, with the Super Lig club receiving around 35% of the fee.
Once again it was insisted the striker is personally pushing for the transfer to happen.
Now it’s time to take a look in the Netherlands, where there’s ‘disbelief’ that the move is happening, according to AD, who say he’s ‘on his way’ to the Premier League club.
The Dutch newspaper says that, again, Weghorst ‘laughs at his critics’ after a career of having to prove himself repeatedly.
AD say the player’s story is ‘beautiful’ after he wasn’t deemed good enough by FC Twente as a youngster. Willem II gave him a chance but he didn’t graduate from the reserves, similar happened in two years at FC Emmen, before he was allowed to join Heracles as a free agent.
Things got better from there for Weghorst, and despite struggling at Burnley, he’s found his feet at Besiktas and caught attention from Erik ten Hag.
AD point out the two men are from the same area. The manager is from Oldenzaal, and the striker from Borne, both in the Twente region.
Elsewhere in AD today, columnist Willem van Hanegem states: ‘I wish Wout Weghorst a 15-year contract with Manchester United. But how is it possible that one of the biggest clubs in the world has to knock on his door? Why do they still have a youth academy there?’
