Following the surprising news from morning which said Manchester United are getting closer to an agreement for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, it’s time for the French media to have a say on the situation.
L’Equipe features a story which is totally focused on the player’s decision, claiming he has the options of leaving the Spanish side or agreeing to a contract extension.
It’s claimed that before picking one, Varane is set to have a discussion with manager Carlo Ancelotti, with whom he worked at Real Madrid before.
The defender isn’t expected to leave the club for the sake of leaving, as he’s only going somewhere else where he’s ‘certain that a serious sporting project appears’. Meanwhile, on Real Madrid’s side, the club wouldn’t be against his departure in case an offer of €60m arrives.
Regarding Manchester United, L’Equipe writes that Varane became the club’s ‘priority’. That doesn’t mean things are advanced, because the French newspaper says there’s no personal agreement with the player and no offer made to Real Madrid so far.
They wonder if the €85m spent on the signing of Jadon Sancho will still allow the Red Devils to make another major signing, and add that Varane is ‘watching this project carefully’.
Regarding the competition, it’s said Paris Saint Germain are more focused on signing of Sergio Ramos, who’s become a free agent this summer. Meanwhile, Chelsea are also interested in the Frenchman, but seem to not be as close as the others.
