Bournemouth appear increasingly likely to keep Julián Araujo in England after fresh reports from Mexico indicate the defender has turned down the chance to return to Liga MX in favour of fighting for his place on the South Coast.
Araujo has already reported for pre-season after his loan spell at Celtic, where injuries restricted him to 11 appearances and one goal, and his immediate focus now appears to be convincing Marco Rose he deserves a role in the Cherries’ squad.
While there had been speculation over a move to Cruz Azul, multiple outlets in Mexico now agree that option is no longer under consideration.
Bournemouth given encouragement over defender’s stance
Both SoyFutbol and Marca México report the right-back has rejected the opportunity to join Cruz Azul because he wants to continue his career in Europe.
That leaves Bournemouth in a stronger position ahead of the new campaign, with the right-back determined to earn his place rather than seek an immediate exit.
The reports also state Bournemouth are looking for around €7.5m (£6.5m) if they are to sell the Mexico international this summer, a figure which would also have made any move to Cruz Azul difficult.
Araujo wants chance to impress
Julián Araujo returned to Bournemouth this month after an injury-hit loan at Celtic.
The 24-year-old showed flashes of quality in Scotland but was limited to fewer than 900 minutes after suffering a setback in March, eventually missing the 2026 World Cup with Mexico.
Now fully fit again, he is using pre-season to try to change his situation at Bournemouth rather than look elsewhere.
Bournemouth’s schedule of friendlies against St. Pauli, Augsburg, Genoa, Real Betis and Mainz will give Araujo several opportunities to impress before the Premier League campaign begins.
That means the coming weeks could prove decisive. Rather than pushing for another move after his Celtic spell, the defender’s priority is now to show he can still earn a place in Bournemouth’s plans.
