The Italian media are finally reaching some sort of consensus regarding Diego Llorente’s situation.
For a while there’d been various contradictory claims about the deal which took the defender from Leeds United to AS Roma, with the move initially happening in the January 2023 window.
A purchase clause was mentioned repeatedly, and at times this was said to be mandatory, but there were other sources saying the loan was a ‘dry’ one, meaning there was no buying option or obligation in place.
The latter appears to be the reality, and Llorente is now waiting to find out what will happen with his future. He’s contracted with Leeds United and will therefore be expected to join up with them for pre-season, however, that’s not thought to be what he wants.
Monday’s edition of Corriere dello Sport reports the defender hopes to stay at Roma and is keen for a new deal to be agreed.
Llorente ‘wants to take advantage’ of Leeds United’s failure to gain promotion to the Premier League, and secure another loan move away from Elland Road.
The 30-year-old has a contract lasting until 2026, and it’s got to be certain that Leeds United would rather try for an outright sale.
