On July 3rd, ABC journalist Tomás González-Martín stated Raphaël Varane has agreed personal terms with Manchester United and wants his transfer sorted out within the next two weeks.
There hasn’t been any progress on this front since then and the defender is still at Real Madrid, where he has a contract until 2022.
González-Martín has come up with another report today, detailing the proposal tabled by the Red Devils and Los Blancos’ plans for the 28-year-old.
He claims the centre-back’s future is still unknown and anything can happen before the window closes.
Varane demands a ‘great contract’ worth €12m annually [to match David Alaba’s wages], but the La Liga giants can only offer a raise up to €7m per season. The ‘economic difference is the key to the disagreement’ between the two parties.
The disagreement with wages plus Zinedine Zidane’s exit favour the former Lens man to leave Real Madrid, but so far, ‘nothing has been decided’.
The ‘most likely thing’ is that Varane will be transferred to United, but they are warned the Spanish side will ‘not sell badly’.
ABC explain Varane ‘wants to go to Manchester’, but the English club ‘only offers a maximum of €45m’.
This figure is €5m short of the minimum demands set by Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Real Madrid will not let Varane leave the club until their valuation is met, even if it means they see him leave for nothing in 12 months’ time.
This, possibly could be a tactic from Real Madrid to put pressure on Manchester United to pay the additional €5m to sign Varane, meaning we are now entering a game of chicken.
