KVK Tienen goalkeeper Sofiane Bouzian has revealed how he is using Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy as an inspiration for his own career.
The 22-year-old is currently turning out for the 1ste National team, having left Jupiler Pro League side KV Mechelen last year in search of first team football.
A step down a division at this point in his career was something that the goalkeeper was probably not anticipating at this moment in time, particularly when he is moving on a free transfer.
Sometimes it takes longer for other players, though, something that Chelsea’s Mendy can attest to.
He was without a club in 2014 after being released by Cherbourg but worked his way back up the ladder, first joining Marseille B after a year out of the game before moving to Reims and then Stade Rennais.
Those are notable successes for a man who was without a club less than a decade ago, and Bouzian admits he uses it as inspiration.
“Edouard, for me, is a great source of inspiration,” he told Walfoot.
“The guy was unemployed and nearly wanted to quit but he didn’t give up, he kept going. And when you see where he is today… it’s a magnificent journey.
“Why not do the same? I’m also someone who doesn’t want to give up. I have always believed and will always believe in my qualities!
“In my eyes, it’s only hard work that pays off. We’re going to continue, whatever happens, on this path. Whatever happens, I will always give it my all, never give up.”
